THE BMW 4-series finds itself in that sweet spot where size and performance come together quite stylishly.
The expansion of this mid-size sporty BMW model into the electric fold continues with its good looks and well-balanced performance characteristics. The BMW i4 eDrive35 M Sport, reviewed here, charges along quietly, turning in impressive performances for an EV.
The prevalent lack of feel is perhaps a feature of EVs that has to be expected and accepted, with little recourse for change. Maybe more artificial injections of emotion may be programmed down the line, but, until then, you’ll have to accept what’s available.
That BMW design flair is evident here. Other than its large grille, this variant of the i4 looks dashing, is dashing, but effects it all in a subtle manner.

Lots Of Shaping
There are very few — if any — flat panels on the i4. There are curves and folds galore to keep your eyes focused on its visual appeal.
The long bonnet with the grooves draw your attention to the BMW logo recessed above the huge ceremonial grille, framed by multiple folds and the LED headlamps.
Similarly, the rear is a sculpture of lines and designs that keeps you occupied as you take in every detail, especially the patterns worked into the tail lights.
Even the wheels are not spared. A glossy finish with multiple patterns radiating out, holds your attention.
It’s a complex coming together of different design disciplines; but with an intensity that manages to fall together in place, at a price of $342,888*.
Tech On The Move
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology offers improved range and charging times, and continues to deliver smooth, powerful performances.
The instant torque kicks in, to whip you from 0 to 100kmh in six seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 190kmh. It’s not blindingly fast, but it’s great for traffic light hops, and nice on long runs, with 210kW of power on hand and 400Nm of torque at the ready.

Moving with some deliberate acceleration suits the i4; it’s in slow traffic and low speeds that it is a bit jerky, rocky and a tad uncomfortable.
In Sport mode, the i4 perks up. The iconic sound goes up a notch, to just above a whisper, and you are carried by the quiet spirit of speed and willing acceleration.
This rear-wheel-driven i4 skips around obstacles nimbly for a two-tonne car, and takes 12.5 metres to turn around.
Creature Comforts
For all the sporting references in its badging, it still comes across as a car that would rather treat its occupants to a smooth, comfortable journey.
Fortunately, in that regard, this i4 is set up to be passenger friendly. A bit tight for legroom at the back, but it’s spacious in front. On the mustard tan seats of the test drive car, there’s enough hugging and cosseting as you push the i4 through its paces.
Parts of the trim have patterns etched into them, which are complemented by the ambient lighting that can be changed to suit your mood.
Tricky Terrain
A large display delivers vivid graphics and information that are customisable to incorporate the features you want on display.
But, as always, hunting for things on the run is like trying to thread a needle while riding a horse. Lots of failed attempts, and always the danger you might spend too much time trying to hit your target than keeping your eyes on the road!
Some features are also several steps deep. Trying to change the sound settings for instance requires a number of taps (factor in some wrong moves as well). At least adjusting the volume of the excellent sound system can be done via the steering wheel or the knob on the centre console.
There’s a lot you can quietly appreciate about the i4. It’s performance is predictable, loaded as it is with an array of safety features, the creature comforts are well taken care of, connectivity is excellent, with wired and wireless charging options. All that’s left is to sit back and enjoy the ride.
