A Quieter New Phantom On The Roll

WHEN money is not an issue, the sky’s the limit.

At least that’s how it feels when you’re heading to lunch in the backseat of the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the night sky has been transplanted overhead.

The little pinpricks of light are painstakingly done by hand and add $48,000 to the cost of the car, but if you desire a galactic journey, then this is the closest you’ll get to it for a while.

The Starlight Headliner can also be programmed to incorporate a shooting star. The price of that may be astronomical, but if you can reach for the stars, go for it.

And that’s pretty much what the Rolls-Royce owner will be banking on. Every whim and desire that is legal and safe will be accommodated.

With the new New Phantom, Rolls-Royce offers a range of new offerings. A dashboard that can be customised with your own art choices, and not to mention the variety of trims and colours to create your ideal space.

On The Quiet

Rolls-Royce has also gone to great lengths to keep things quiet. Built on the scalable Architecture of Luxury, an all-aluminium spaceframe that will be the basic building block of this and future Rolls-Royce vehicles, it affords more “magic” in that magic carpet ride the brand is so famous for.

Acoustic insulation includes more than 130kg of sound dampening, with two layers of glazing, double skin alloy on the floor and bulkhead, heavy foam and felt layers and even a foam layer in the tyre for a “silent seal”.

The result is a Phantom that ghosts along at 90% of its predecessor’s noise levels, at 100kmh. Just saying.

And since you’re in a 2.5-ton car with an all-new 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 onboard, and with 900Nm of torque to play with, the temptation to speed might be overtaken by the swiftness of its power delivery.

For all the load it carries, the New Phantom floats blithely from standstill to 100kmh in 5.2 seconds.

It may be close to 6m in length, but it handles deceptively simply. It takes 2.5 lanes to do a U-turn and it’s ability to get up and boogie is quite impeccable. Take it for a run and a dash about and the air suspension keeps that magic carpet ride going even as you feel the effects of the two turbochargers, which kick in when the needle has barely moved to 1,700rpm.

The eight-speed ZF gearbox is mated to a satellite transmission which reads the road ahead and prepares gears and suspension to accommodate what’s to come. Such prescience is almost akin to autonomous driving.

If you’re in front, you’ll be assured that for all its size and power, the Phantom will be obedient. If you’re in the back, just sit back and take in the comfort, and watch what’s on your personal screen, or sip some champer,s or strike another business deal.
