From Africa To The Streets

Much like the wild inhabitants of the African savannah they depict, Thomas Sabo’s latest collection of glam accessories intends to leap off your chest and grab your attention by the throat.

We used to say they were gaudy and ostentatious but garish and in your face jewellery is making a come back as hip street fashion in the last couple of years. Loud animal pendants and large bejewelled crosses are back in! Once reserved only for flamboyant, leotard wearing frontmen of ’80s hair-metal bands, these ornate conversation starters for the neck are now marketed as edgy, urban, streetwear chic.

While they may be branded as hip accessories made for strutting around on the mean streets, that hasn’t stopped Thomas Sabo from injecting exquisite workmanship to give them a luxury boost.

The Africa collection takes inspiration from the continent’s tribal roots, the symbology of its cultures, and the powerful colours of nature. Design codes from tribal shields and spearheads are combined with plait patterns and floral cut-off motifs using a special layering technique to create large, detailed and intricate pendants. Combine them with karma beads of silver, gold, glass, and turquoise for a truly unique necklace.

The Rebel collection follows suit with a similarly baroque skull motif.

If you prefer something a little more tasteful and understated, the collection (upwards of $91) also features elegant earrings, pendants, and rings set with tiger’s eye crystal, mother of pearl, and onyx.
