It can be a bit much at times, with information overload evident in the centre display — almost to the point of being distracting, especially when using satellite navigation. Sometimes keeping things simple would be helpful if safety is one of your targets, and you want to keep eyes on the road.

The new woven Nappa leather seats give the cabin a more luxurious feel. And there’s a version in plum seats that costs an extra grand. It softens the all-black interior, but does fight with the new vivid blue paintwork of the test drive unit.

Functional Wheels

Anyone expecting an exhilarating drive from the Qashqai would best look elsewhere. This is a people carrier that is practical, filled with little touches that connect with the occupants. It’s not about getting there in a rush.

The two-litre aluminium engine gasps for breath when pushed, and is much more comfortable for sedate runs. It would be interesting to see how the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine performs.

A soft, spongy ride absorbs any unwelcome intrusions, letting the passengers toenjoy the music from the sound system, or remain absorbed in whatever devices they may have their noses glued to.
