Making Calm Decisions — WED WEB CHAT

Dr Gerard Wong, MBSAT
Physician and certified MBSAT teacher, Dr Gerard Wong talks about the benefit of mindfulness at the WED WEB CHAT — Calm Decision-making.

GOT an important decision to make?

But it’s not easy to make the best decisions with so many intrusive thoughts about other things fighting for attention.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the moment-by-moment sensations and experiences of life.

The practice helps to cultivate our ability to understand our relationship with others, and to better cope with the challenges of life. It is a contemplative practice that leads to a greater understanding of our thoughts, feelings, and perceptions, and how we can relate to others more effectively.

The Calm State

Mindfulness produces a mental state that involves being aware of your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in the present moment with acceptance and kindness. It is the awareness of being fully alive in the moment.

It is a tool we can use to learn to recognize when we are thinking about our past or future, and how to deal with the difficult moments of our present lives.

Mindfulness practices are known to have been around for centuries, and recently have become more popular, mostly to reduce stress in a world characterized by increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA).

It provides us with the ability to fully acknowledge thoughts, emotions, and sensations and respond to them in a rational, caring and compassionate way. It can help to bring awareness to negative thinking and focus on one’s thoughts and feelings without letting them run away with us.

Mindfulness at work is an important topic to explore because it can help people better manage their time, increase productivity, reduce stress levels and anxiety, improve focus and concentration skills, make better decisions more easily with less emotional interference or reactivity.

Mindfulness-Based Strategic Awareness Training (MBSAT) is a programme that will enable a panoramic awareness with clarity of mind, positive emotions, friendliness, practical wisdom and skilful responses to our socially-constructed reality.

MBSAT combines mindfulness with positive psychology and integrates multiple disciplines including behavioural economics, system dynamics, results-oriented business strategy and risk management.

Practitioners of MBSAT acquire skilful decision-making abilities which enable good outcomes in their personal and professional lives. The result is a better quality of life and well-being.

Dr Gerard Wong is a physician, certified MBSAT teacher and certified professional coach. He is a panellist on the WED WEB CHAT — Calm Decision-making on 16 March 2022, from 12:45-1:30pm (SGT).
