The A6 That Almost Didn’t Make It

SOME unplanned offspring turn out to be blessings in disguise.

So it was with the Audi A6, which started off as an unwanted child and developed into a bread-and-butter model for the German brand. Originally not on the official drawingboard, it was a covert design that was eventually given the green light and rolled out in 1968 as the Audi 100. It sold 800,000 units and established the model’s popularity.

Several iterations later, it was rebadged as the A6 in 1994, with a V6 replacing the inline 5 engine.

Into its eighth form, the A6 fits comfortably into the family look of the Audi range but still with some unease. To some extent it’s a victim of its own success, and the success of the Audi brand.

The Sandwich Class

Propping up the full-sized Audi models, it is also sandwiched between the A8, Q8 and A7 above and the A5 and Q5 below.

The A6 is a model that can often be passed over as covetous eyes look futher up the model ranges and budgets look down the line. As technology flows into the Audi models, the playing field is evening out in terms of safety features and value-added options, subject to budgets, of course.

For those in search of an executive vehicle that is not flashy in terms of its looks, the A6 delivers in spades. There’s enough about its design highlights — the lights and the door handles to the sloping pillars and the sunroof, to hold your interest.

Digital capability means it’s up there with the rest of the Audi range in terms of connecting you to your virtual world. Haptic feedback ensures you get a nice click when you press the touchscreens, and in some instances you can slide your finger to get to the exact setting required.

Audi Virtual Cockpit lays everything out for the driver, and combined with head up display lets you have a commanding view of the road ahead.

Good Views

Cameras and up to 24 sensors provide 360° views and feedback of the surrounding, so you can keep tabs on unwanted kerbside activity, tight spots or what may not be in your line of sight.

The 3L, V6 delivers a smooth performance. It’s such a sweet ride, you’ll easily get used to how it keeps passenger comfort as a major consideration. When pushed, it effortlessly streams out a refined and unharried flow of power with poise and purpose.

For a model that may not have been, the A6 has found its way into the consciousness of the Audi brand. But with the changes taking place in the industry, it will have to continue to fight for its status.
