Even as the global issues threaten to overwhelm us, we still have to take control of what we are responsible for. Keep It Going brings together leaders who have found ways to build their own businesses despite difficult times, and who are happy to share their views.
In previous years, Keep It Going has brought together a range of leaders in various fields, who have generously shared their views and opinions.

Panel 1: We Have The Medicine, But Is It Too Bitter To Swallow?

Edwin Chow / Group COO, CellResearch Corporation Group of Companies

Edwin has been instrumental in the management of CellResearch Corporation Group of Companies since inception. He has over 16 years experience in operations.

Prior to joining CellResearch, he was actively involved in the fund raising and operation of several start-up companies in the technology space — Growell Digital, 3R Digital and eSamsung (an affiliate of Samsung Group of Companies).

Edwin started his career at the National Science and Technology Board (now A*STAR), where he was responsible for helping both local and overseas companies establish a research and development footprint in Singapore.

A Honours graduate of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, Edwin has always been interested in the field of bio-engineering and materials since his youth. He takes an active interest in the life science biotech industry and continues to see the potential stem cell therapy offers.

Shirley Crystal Chua / Founder of Golden Equator Capital

An enterprising visionary, Shirley Crystal brings with her a high level of asset management expertise as well as a comprehensive awareness of the needs of high net-worth individuals and companies. She leads a talented team, providing world-class services to clients.

Known for her strong business acumen and charisma, Shirley Crystal also spearheads Golden Equator Capital’s Private Equity Fund Management arm, which is focused on investing in companies with expansion capabilities and strong growth potential. The team shares their robust networks, international knowledge, and expertise in various areas to help each portfolio investment company grow strategically into a global player. The deep involvement in business strategies and operational and technological competences add value to companies, generating strong and sustainable returns for all shareholders.

With substantial experience in asset management advisory, Shirley Crystal also guides international businesses on global trends, strategic directions, and ways to bridge business gaps. She has exhibited an exceptional ability to master the art of business architecture, charting out the course of companies at different stages of growth, in line with their respective corporate strategies. An agent of change, she uses her sound understanding of business principles and concepts to establish and maintain organisational effectiveness.

Shirley Crystal was previously a Director at Citibank Singapore, handling high net-worth clients from Asia and Europe, as well as mentoring new bankers and supervising a team of experienced relationship managers. During her time there, she received numerous awards for her outstanding performance and contributions to the company. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Bank’s branch at Paragon, Singapore.

Shirley Crystal started her career at American Express International, where she led a team in the area of marketing and channel distribution. She graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences, majoring in Economics and Southeast Asian Studies.

Adrian Tan / Author & Lawyer, Morgan Lewis Stamford

Adrian is a best-selling novellist and litigator at Morgan Lewis Stamford, where he practises intellectual property and technology law.‎

Adrian is the Treasurer of the Law Society of Singapore, the honorary legal advisor to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, and a member of the Speak Good English Movement.

Panel 2: All Aboard The Brain Train

Chen Shiqin / CMO & Co-Founder, Crate Gallery

Naturally inquisitive, Shiqin enjoys meeting and connecting with different people. Learning through their experiences allows her to connect the dots better and have a more intimate view of the world.

Besides her experience with project management, graphic design, and marketing consultancy, Shiqin is also a co-founder of Crate Gallery — Asia’s first collaborative publishing platform that focuses on supporting transmedia storytelling.

Lionel Lim / Vice President and Managing Director Asia Pacific and Japan, Pivotal

Lionel is responsible for growing Pivotal’s business and expanding the company’s customer momentum across the Asia Pacific and Japan region.

A veteran of the information technology industry, Lionel has over 30 years of experience leading and managing global brands and organizations across the Asia Pacific region. He has a successful track record leading high performing teams and growing enterprise technology brands. Prior to Pivotal, Lionel was President of CA Technologies in Asia Pacific and Japan. In addition, Lionel spent over 20 years at Sun Microsystems (now Oracle), where he held several leadership positions including President and COO of Sun Microsystems in Asia Pacific and Japan.

Lionel is a Board Member for Singapore Telco M1 Limited and a member of the IT Committee of the SingHealth Group, the largest health care organization in Singapore. He is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors and is a cohort of the INSEAD International Directors Program 2014.

Lionel graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree in electrical and electronics engineering.

Dipak Natali / Director of Organization Development, Special Olympics

Dipak develops and delivers quality sports programmes that empower people with intellectual disabilities in 26 countries across the region to become contributing members of society.

A respected veteran with more than 15 years of experience in the non-profit sector, Dipak has worked in a variety of roles with leading charities in the UK and around the world, including Scope, the Prince’s Trust, and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Special Olympics is a global movement that every day transforms the lives of people with intellectual disabilities from the age of two and above, through the transformative power of all-ability sports, healthcare services, social inclusion and community building . We empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all.

Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown to more than 4.4 million athletes (people with intellectual disabilities) in 169 countries.

The Asia Pacific region is headquartered in Singapore, to oversee the operations of the Special Olympics Movement in 26 countries from Afghanistan to the Pacific Islands. Special Olympics Asia Pacific is the largest region (out of seven) in the world, serving more than 1.5 million people with intellectual disabilities.

Ku Swee Yong / Director, International Property Advisor

Swee Yong’s views on the property market are sought after regularly. He has published four books on the property market: Real Estate Riches, Building Your Real Estate Riches, Real Estate Realities and Weathering a Property Downturn.

He is the Key Executive Officer of International Property Advisor, and is also an adjunct lecturer in the National University of Singapore and the Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Century 21 Singapore has 21 franchisees and about 1,100 licensed real estate professionals across Singapore providing services in real estate brokerage, leasing, property management and consultancy.

He was a Director in the Real Estate Centre of Expertise at Société Générale Private Banking, responsible for advising clients on real estate investments, the Director of Marketing and Business Development at Savills Singapore and the General Manager at Far East Organization’s Indonesia office.

He holds an MBA in Marketing from University of Hull, UK, and completed his BSc in the Imperial College, University of London, UK and the Institut Louis Pasteur, Université de Strasbourg, France.

Panel 3: Beyond Comfort Zones

Danny Loong / Co-Founder & Chief Creative Director of Timbre Group

Danny started off as the bandleader of a blues, soul and funk band “Ublues” who has performed in countries such as Australia, Spain, Italy and parts of Asia.

Ublues received critical acclaim in USA at the “International Blues Challenge” in Memphis USA in 2003 and has also shared international festival billings with legends such as James Brown, Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, John Legend to name a few. Ublues was also the first Asian band to be invited to perform in the prestigious music festival in Byron Bay, Bluesfest in their 20 years history.

Danny with partner Edward Chia, started Timbre Group a holding company with a diversified portfolio of music lifestyle brands creating an eco-system of holistic and synergistic range of businesses. This range from food and beverage concepts such as the Timbre chain of live music restaurants and bars, key big scale events such as Beerfest Asia, event and artists management, music production, and an music education arm, Timbre Music Academy.

Danny and Edward were both conferred the “Tourism Entrepreneur of The Year” award by the Singapore Tourism Board at the Singapore Experience Awards in 2010, and recently their biggest venue Timbre+ at One North.

Charlie Ang / Founding President, The Innovators Institute

Charlie is a venture investor, business futurist and innovation evangelist who is deeply passionate about future trends, strategic innovation and disruptive technologies.

He is the Founding President of The Innovators Institute, Co-founder of The Innovators Network, Co-founder of The IdeasCollider!, and Partner and Head for Singapore at KIATT (a deep technology and commercial science global venture capital firm). Charlie is also serving as the Partnership Director of SU Global(Singapore Chapter), which is the worldwide alumni network of Singularity University.

As an entrepreneur, Charlie co-founded several start-ups, including a high tech venture that raised $ 5 million capital and grew to 80 staff and made one successful exit to a HR group. He is currently advising a portfolio of exciting technology start-ups, including MoolahSense (Singapore’s first peer-to-peer crowdlending platform), CloudBuy plc (World’s leading B2B cloud marketplace platform).

Charlie was previously a trade diplomat with the Singapore government. He headed the Trade & Commercial Department of the Singapore embassies in Indonesia and Philippines while concurrently serving as the Centre Director of International Enterprise Singapore in these countries. During his five-year stint in the government, he was recognized with several accolades at the civil service, ministry and agency levels, including the Star Service Award, GEMS Prize (Top IES Winner), and Service Excellence Award (Top Winner).

He received his MBA from the NUS Business School and BSc (First Class) Honours in Computer Science from University of Manchester, UK. Charlie completed strategic futures and innovation executive programmes at Singularity University in Silicon Valley, Oxford University’s Said Business School and Stanford University.

His professional agenda is to help executives, engineers and entrepreneurs in Singapore adopt an Innovator mindset and win in the Innovation Economy. He writes and speaks regularly on strategic futures and innovation.

Rameez / Co-Founder & Director, CIRCLES.LIFE

Rameez is responsible for business and operations, of Circles Asia and is the lead visionary and architect of Circles.Life in Singapore.

Rameez co-founded and has managed TechCube8, a technology, media and telecoms (TMT) focused venture fund that received co-investment from the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). Before TechCube8, Rameez was in portfolio management and investments at Temasek Holdings. He also previously worked in corporate finance as an M&A consultant with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Rameez has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Clemen Chiang / CEO & Founder Aly Pte Ltd

Clemen is a Certified ScrumMaster with Scrum Alliance, a not-for-profit professional membership organization created to share the Scrum framework and transform the world of work. Applying ScrumMaster values, practices, and applications, Clemen directs tech development by helping and motivating the team to work together and learn the Scrum framework.

An engineer by training, Clemen attained an MBA in Entrepreneurship from the University of Louisville, U.S.A, in 2002, and was awarded Chartered Fellow at the Chartered Management Institute in 2003. In 2004, he was awarded the Chartered Marketer status by The Chartered Institute of Marketing. His other awards include: Shah Family Prize by Professor Haresh C. Shah of Stanford University for outstanding leadership and entrepreneurship qualities through extra-curricular activities and good academic standing in 1996; and Recipient of the Singapore International Foundation-ASEAN Visiting Student Fellowship in 1996. Bestowed the “Key to the City” of Louisville by Mayor David L. Armstrong in 2002.

Clemen is also co-founder of CozyCot.com, a multiple-award winning, leading women’s site that features beauty, fashion, lifestyle, forums, reviews, shopping and sprees. It attracts over 42,000 forum threads with more than 2.2 million postings to date. Clemen led the company’s tech development and helped build it into one of Asia’s fastest growing online media networks covering 9 countries with over 28 million monthly unique visitors.

Clemen is a taekwondo black-belt, and an avid rugby player. He is married, with three sons who share his passion for a good scrum.
