IF IT isn’t enough that people are becoming more and more engrossed and isolated in their mobile devices and apps, Sony offers another reason to do so.
Never mind if you don’t look the smartest with your headset strapped across your head as you walk around town — you may think you’re cool, others consider you a fool — but it’s like those chaps with pants that hang down below their hips offering a cracking view of their underwear (hopefully they are wearing some); they are making a statement of sorts.
Back to headsets.
For those who enjoy good music without strings attached, the SONY WH-1000XM3 delivers more than just music. It creates an environment that lets you engage with your music at a more intimate level.
The cushioned cans do a good job of keeping the external sounds out, but they certainly warm up your ears if you’re traipsing around town in the tropics. In colder climes, they’d serve as good ear muffs. Just remember it’s not waterproof, and there are the usual warnings about using it while on the move.
Except maybe if you’re a passenger. Then the noise cancelling feature would be greatly appreciated. It is outstanding, especially if you’d like to keep the sound of a noisy household at bay. Shut them out, and enjoy the sound of silence. Literally.

Intimate Soundstage
The soundstage of the headphone is set closer in, but in that, there’s clearer definition and clarity of instrumentation. The knocking on the door at the start of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb is more evident. Likewise, the vocals are more in your face.
The Bluetooth headphones connect with your mobile phone, so there will not be any separation anxiety. But handling it on the right side of the headphone can take some practise.
Double tap the right side to pause and play the music, cup it to mute the sound and drag your finger along the surface to play with the volume and advance or repeat a track.

Voice calls — a rarity these days — are delivered with reasonable clarity, depending on your phone and reception.
If you’re playing games, the 1000XM3 offers a comfortable fit that lets you focus on what’s on the screen.
There is a dedicated app for this phone, which provides more features. But do you want to mess with another app that doesn’t seem to be able to bring your entire music library across?
