RETIREMENT, often viewed as just reward after a lifetime of hard work, has undergone some major rethinks.
We now live longer, healthier lives and this is changing the way we think and view the entire concept or retirement.
Our thoughts are more aimed towards a third phase of life, and reinventing ourselves with greater purpose and meaning.
But some old expectations, mindsets and practices still remain. But in a world that has changed drastically in the past few decades, is retirement even a viable option?
The panel discussing The Rise Of The UnRetired on Wednesday 5 October (12:45-1:30pm SGT) comprises “retirees” who are still very much engaged in activities and jobs that fully utilise their expertise.

Zainab Rahim, Broadcaster To Author
Zainab Rahim was trained in Social Science and spent 35 years in broadcasting in Singapore. She was and trained in RNTC (Netherlands), BBC London and the Newsdesk, ABC (Australia).
She moved from mass communication to interpersonal relationships, and was a trainer/counsellor with Citibank and the Tsao Foundation. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Singapore’s Media this year.
She has written two books — Never A Victim and Emotional Empowerment.
Zainab had worked with the 3 Prime Ministers of Singapore.
Jasmine Adams, Lawyer Turned Tour Guide
After many years of practicing and teaching law, Jasmine Adams ventured into the creative industry as the director of Design Unit, with her late husband, Brian Adams.
With her Master’s Degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore, the born-and-bred Peranakan has given demonstrations and talks at Baba House on Peranakan food and culture. As a licensed tourist guide with Singapore Tourism Board, Jasmine enjoys curating and conducting tours.
She also strongly believes in keeping memories, and has a company which produces Legacy videos.
Jasmine is a volunteer community interviewer with Oral Archives of Singapore and writes as well as collaborates with others to encapsulate their recollections, recipes and other treasures.
Mohammad Alami Musa, From Engineering To Religious Studies And Diplomacy
Mohammad Alami Musa is the Head of Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies (SRP) Programme at RSIS of the Nanyang Technological University.
He is Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
He is a member of Advisory panel of the African-Singapore Business Forum. He is also a Resource Person for religious harmony for Ministry of Home Affairs and sits on its Independent Review Panel.
He is a Justice of Peace and is a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
He served as the President of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore from 2003 to August 2021. For his service to Singapore and society, he was conferred the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) during the country’s 50th National Day celebrations.
He studied at the University of Singapore, where he obtained both his Bachelors and MSc degrees in Engineering.
Dr Amir Singh, Educator in Psychology And Counselling
Dr Amir Singh is still actively creating new opportunities. He is starting the psychology and counselling department at Training Vision Institute.
He is also an Adjunct professor at MDIS, where he was previously the Chair of the Internal Examination Board, Senior Lecturer and Institute Counsellor.
He is skilled in Clinical Research, Coaching, Lecturing, Interventions, and Career Counseling.
He is a strong community and social services professional with a PhD in Psychological Science and a PhD in Educational Management. His Master’s degree is in guidance and counselling.
He has developed National Skills Recognition System (NSRS) and Advanced Certification in Training and Assessment (ACTA) for the Workforce Development Agency (WDA). He is also a certified Family Life Educator, Mediator and was a Marriage Solemnizer.
Suresh Menon, Flying To Training Future Aviators
Suresh Menon has been a pilot for more than 40 years. He has flown a variety of aircraft with Singapore Airlines and is currently a pilot instructor.
He has held positions in various airline related organisations, including more than 5 years as the Regional VP East Asia with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations. He has lectured at the Singapore Aviation Academy. He has won international awards for his role in aviation.
Suresh has also received national awards for his involvement in community services. He is the Chairman of the standing committee of Children in Care, Sunbeam Place.
