Fritz Hansen, W. AtelierSOME things are worth waiting for.W. Atelier’s new showroom on Henderson Road is now open after some bureaucratic hiccups (mainly to do with installing an elevator), but it’s proven to be well worth the wait

The airy 20,000sqft of space offers lots to see, touch and sit on, without being over crowded. A result of the Japanese architect’s Kaizen philosophy of continuous improvement, the hefty $7 million renovation must now pay for itself, admits Gani Atmadiredja, Managing Director of W. Atelier.

To enable this, W. Atelier has assembled a larger group of partners to provide home interior statements.img_2500

The TOTO brand, which has been central to the company’s growth, enjoys a top-floor showing. Rows of toilets are on display, including one that swirls when you hit the  button on the remote  control. On show are toilets with different themes, including one with an arm for you to rest your tablet or arm on to occupy yourself.

Accommodating the needs of the connected world seems to be an important aspect of furniture and interior design these days.

Kitchens Updated

The kitchens come with charging ports and furniture seems to bend and fold to the needs of the wireless community.

The kitchens span a range of designs. From Germany to the region, they fit a variety of price points. Next125 and Siematic are German brands that turn on the design charm, cloaking practicality behind sleek exteriors. TOTO kitchens emulate these stylish European designs but utilise regional materials.

Fritz Hansen, another stalwart of W. Atelier since acquiring the distribution rights, continues to stand firm for the pre-wireless era. It’s designs go back to the 1950s and continue to remain relevant. There are some new models, which encourage more face-to-face interaction, like the relatively new dining table on show.

One of the icons of furniture design is the form-fitting beanbag; a simple idZanotta beanbagea that created a centrepiece that could appeal to the entire family, as long as they had strong legs to get them off the ground. Zanotta, which first introduced this seating concept in 1968, has produced it regularly, and has a red version made from a new material, VIP.
“Very important plastic,” quips Macro van Velsen, Zanotta’s giant of an Export Manager. Along with the bean bag are other pieces of furniture with sleek and more defined form factors that would fit in any stylish home.

Lighting from different countries cast their special aura on the showroom. Lightyears, Santa & Cole and Lasvit bring their own sense of illumination to the showroom.

W. Atelier (watelier.com) is located at 201 Henderson Road #01-01 Singapore 159545
