wwc151221

The last WED WEB CHAT for 2021 focused on the year thus far and looked ahead, to 2022.

Panellists Jamus Lim, Associate Professor of Economics at ESSEC Business School, Asia-Pacific, Ku Swee Yong, Chief Investment Officer of Kasa Singapore and Edwin Yeo, CEO & MD (SG) of Cornerstone International Group provided perspectives from their respective industries.

The discussion, moderated by Kannan Chandran, Publisher of www.storm-asia.com, covered the current spending habits, the widening income gap caused by the pandemic, the role of convention centres and shopping malls and the need to review some mega infrastructure developments.

You can watch the full discussion in the video at the foot of this article.

Here are some highlights to get you in the mood.

Haves & Have Nots (The Gap Widens)

Property transactions and the demand for luxury goods have gone up despite the pandemic and the uncertainty about a return to normal ways.

While the rich have more cash in hand, at the other end of the spectrum, the poor are struggling and the spectre of a goods and services tax hike is on the cards.

Lessons From The Pandemic

Many of the lessons from the pandemic are of a global nature. Some trends are taking place worldwide, others are different depending on the local circumstances.

As people hope for a new normal to plan their onward journey, they are faced with a virus that continues to mutate, which leaves a lot of decisions hanging.

What Will 2022 Bring?

Some of our panellists are optimistic about 2022, one other reckons it’ll be an extension of 2021.

The dark clouds of inflation and a slow rebound make the future hazy.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t consider our options as we plan to move forward.
